Veterans in Birmingham: How to Start the Dental Care Conversation
VA dental eligibility is individual. Ask your VA team about benefits and obtain the required referral and authorization before receiving VA-funded community dental care.

Military service and dental benefits
Veterans often hear different explanations about dental coverage. Your eligibility depends on VA’s rules and your circumstances. Enrollment in VA health care does not automatically mean every dental service is covered. Ask your VA dental or health-care team which benefits apply to you, rather than relying on another veteran’s experience or an advertisement.
If you already receive VA care, start with your existing team. If you have not enrolled, use the official VA resources to learn about applying. Keep personal identifiers and benefit documents out of public website forms. VA and the dental office can explain the appropriate channels for sharing information needed for your case.
Ask about community care
Community care means receiving approved services from a community provider under VA’s process. It is not simply choosing a private dentist and assuming VA will pay afterward. Ask your VA team whether community dental care is an option for you and whether the practice you want is in the applicable network.
Dr. Shawn Burl’s practice records document Community Care Network participation. Current participation must still be verified, along with your own eligibility and the particular care authorized. The Birmingham office is an independent dental practice, not a VA facility. Staff can discuss its appointment process without deciding your VA benefit entitlement.
Follow the referral steps
VA’s guidance says to obtain a referral before scheduling community care. After the referral is prepared, follow instructions for scheduling and notifying your VA team. Make sure you receive and understand the authorization letter before treatment. Ask your team if a step is unclear rather than treating a conversation about possible care as approval.
The authorization identifies the approved provider, covered care and authorized period. Keep track of appointments and the time window. If more treatment is recommended, ask how additional approval will be requested. Approval for one service should not be assumed to include every procedure that might later be discussed.
Questions about dentures and mini implants
Tell the dentist what you are having trouble with, such as missing teeth or an appliance that slips. A clinical evaluation helps determine possible treatment options. VA authorization is a separate question. Ask whether each recommended service is included and what happens if the treatment plan changes after examination.
Do not arrange a procedure based only on the belief that veteran status guarantees payment. Ask for a clear explanation of the approval process before proceeding. If a service is outside the authorization, discuss the available choices with the office and VA team. Keep copies of relevant correspondence through your own secure records.
If VA dental benefits are limited
Eligible veterans enrolled in VA health care and certain CHAMPVA beneficiaries may be able to purchase private dental insurance through VADIP. This is insurance with premiums and plan terms, not the same as VA-authorized community care. Compare coverage and confirm the office’s participation for the exact plan before making assumptions about costs.
For questions about scheduling at Dr. Burl’s office, call (205) 254-8555. The practice is at 139 3rd Avenue West, across from Elyton Village. Veterans can also ask about sharing a community story on The Floss Boss. Radio participation does not establish dental eligibility, guarantee an appointment or affect any VA benefit decision.
